Sea Stories for the Imaginative: Pushing the Envelope of Acceptable Naval Fiction

Tentative UWSC Story Arc as of 2006-05-23

UWSC follows the overarching theme of UNAUN, the mission of which is to "morally deprecate all power-projecting nations' flag-waving navies into nothing more than own-shore coastal patrol units" while supplanting them through international crewing of maritime police vessels. Thes are not just "naval vessels" with "cross-decked", temporary-assigned-detachment crew members.  (UNAUN supporters'/insiders joke that maybe the US Coast Guard will take over the maritime duties of the USN.)

This project could last for up to 8 years. It would create jobs, acting opportunities, and entertainment. I envision the use of "real-people", meaning unheard of talent that is not bound or restricted by various studios.

Seasons will last from 6 to 15 episodes. Seasons 1-5 have been sketched or roughly outlined. Here are the numbers of episodes thus far roughed out.

Season 1: 9 episodes

Season 2: 10 episodes

Season 3: 6 episodes

Season 4: 9 episodes

Season 5: 6 episodes

(At least 5 of them are sketched out to 15 to 20 pages of text at size 11 font, on 8.5 by 11 size paper.)

Season 1:

101 "Shakeup" USA, via USN tries to thwart and threaten any allies who try to participate in the UNAUN formation talks, commissions the CGLW-1065, a cruiser which is an up-rated version of the languishing DDG-51 --partly to keep US ship builders in business (while the nation struggles to acquire more combatants), and to make the US look more "international" (to make UNAUN and the fledgling EUMA irrelevant or at least unappealing).

102 "Fire and Ice" The US is trying to find out why the Chinese PLAN is suddenly conducting operations in the Antarctic. Is the US hiding something from the world, or is the PLAN up to a hidden agenda. The implications will be of great consequences.

103 "Watershed" The EU considers disbanding NATO to force the removal of the US organ from the organization. In its place, EU Maritime Agency (EUMA) would emerge to either supplant or bolster the UN Security Council and if the UNSC allows the EUMA to join the UN structure, the UN will get funding it needs, but the price will be heavy for the incumbents.

104 "Shakeup II" USA aims to thwart EUMA. The split allegiances, the rancor and the mistrust drive the virtually still-birthed EUMA to open talks UNAUN, which is underwritten primarily by China and a few Asian and EU members who espouse a more global and less Euro-centric , but definitely non-US, approach to global security and stability.

105 "Pre-Coalescence" UNAUN's first ship, the CGHRD-1095 arrives on-scene for training purposes and to monitor the CGLW-1065 as it pursues "pirates" (which the US firmly believes are actually terrorists). The CGLW-1065 fires warning shots, but then the pirates demand to surrender to the CGHRD-1095. UNAUN has its first international response and the repercussions for the US are profound.

106 " 'The Checklist' " Both Koreas announce they are accelerating their reunification talks. Both sides send exchange students and both sides drop or suspend laws that treat as triple-agents anyone who moves across the borders multiple times without official travel permission. Fingers are pointed, names are dropped, tensions outside the Peninsula rise, and the world watches, holding its breath in anticipation of what will become of the Peninsula divided by the US-heavy United Nations. The USA is not ready to leave Korea, and China makes her move, with delicate consideration for Japan

107 "Olive Branch" "The Checklist" is now contemplated as a source of revenge for some affronted state actors and they want that list turned into a "kill list" for some wayward premiers, presidents, and generals who refuse to tow the status quo line. It is assumed China is the underwriter of accelerated talks between the North and the South. The US (under cover of a squall and gale force winds) intends to sink a ship carrying 4,000 Chinese-made cars bound first for various destinations in South America, then in Portland and Long Beach, the West Coast ports of entry for foreign-made US-bound automobiles. Meanwhile, the US is pushing for UN resolution to invade Iran for her foot-dragging delaying the IAEA entering some sites in Iran. While China and Russia dissent, they otherwise seem to be remaining militarily quiet, but Japan, Taiwan, and the South have ships off Dokdo, each combing the waters for something. One of the ships detects something else-- over 60 nautical miles away -- and moves off at her best weather-conditions-permitting speed of 18 knots to seek it out. The others cautiously trail in and 3.3 days later, lose the datum, but regain it intermittently. 36 hours later, all three of the ships detect and record the acoustics of the attack on the freighter which to reach this point had only achieved 12 knots in the weather conditions. One of the ships breaks off and races west. It is sunk. One of the other ships is attacked yet survives, and the third is left unmolested, but the two ships chart different courses home after disengaging from a brief skirmish. The big twist: none of the four combatants is a UNAUN ship. How will the US plot unfold? How will the Peninsula emerge?

108 "Iced Below" Ships are back in the Antarctic, but this time, the CGLW-1065 both the bait and the target. China is trying to find or find out something, and when she gets her clues, the consequences will monumental. The CGLW-1065 arrives to sniff out what the Chinese are up to again. Some ice bergs calve and disrupt some floes which then block the CGLW-1065. The PLAN ship warns the CGLW-1065 to leave the area due to mining operations in progress. The Texan CO refuses to believe it nor be bullied by the PLAN, and refuses to heed the advice of his UK-born XO and Canadian-born Ops Officer. The ship becomes trapped. Intense atmospheric disruptions block the ship's communications from reaching beyond McMurdo Station and other bases, but will the PLAN rescue the ship or her crew or act to preserve the activities and discoveries of the Chinese research station?

109 "Hallowed Water" A USN SSN or SSGN is lurking in Chinese waters. The PLA and PLAN had been detecting anomalous readings but could only wildly comb the area due to lack of precise information. After weeks of light scouring and making no attempts to depth charge the areas under suspicion, an SSGN is overcome, her crew unable to break free of her constraints. Divers and maintenance swimmers outside the hull unable to return to the safety of the submarine head for the surface, but are retrieved, and will likely never be allowed to be seen again. Weeks later, after a SUBMISS reporting, the USN finds the wreck site-- hundreds of miles away from China-- after reconstructing SOSUS array data that detected tonals of a US submarine racing toward a US base. Suddenly, she maneuvers wildly, dives, and implodes at 2,220 feet, her debris field scattered across 6 square miles, resting at 16,000 feet in pitch black, in a deep-sea river near a trench. Recovering the hull and any clues will be almost impossible at the flow rates of the deep sea river. Why was she so long gone before trying to reach safety? Why was she racing so fast? What incited her to maneuver wildly and then suddenly dive, only to implode 6 minutes later?

Seasons 2-5 episodes counts are indicated above. The details are being withheld for now until the principal photography and other preliminary work (finding sponsors, donors, contributors of money, time, and material.
